Issue

OOB Task agent installation fails on site server with ClientUtility.exe GPF left SMA agent non-functional until comp restart.

Environment

Windows Server 2003 SP2 x86

Symantec Management Platform 7.1 MP1

Out of Band Management 7.1

Cause

According to engineering research this problem caused by unloaded msi.dll (windows installer binary).

Solution

During the Out-of-band task agent installation; the “ClientUtility.exe” was unable to access msi.dll (windows installer binary) and crashed. We could speculate about the possibility what this dll was unloaded after some windows update install or if some process locks this dll for access. If the msi.dll is not accessible, then the plug-in(s) won’t be able to install. Ordinary, computer restart should solve this situation.
