You want to install the VMWare tools on your Virtual SSIM Appliance

Environment

The example in this article is for ESX 4.1. Depending of the version of the Virtualisation software the steps might be different

Solution

In your ESX Console (or VCenter) open your virtual SSIM Appliance and go to :

Inventory -> Guest -> Install VMWare Tools

This will attach the virtual CDROM containing the tool to the SSIM Appliance. However you still need to mount the device.

The command above in the screenshot are an example.

Once the files are extracted in the /root foder typically you have a perf script installed to run like :

[root@atr-ses-sssimvm2 vmware-tools-distrib]# ./vmware-install.pl

A full extract of the log from the installation of the tools:

[root@atr-ses-sssimvm2 ~]# cd /root/vmware-tools-distrib/
[root@atr-ses-sssimvm2 vmware-tools-distrib]# ls -l

The filesystem driver (vmhgfs module) is used only for the shared folder
feature. The rest of the software provided by VMware Tools is designed to work
independently of this feature. If you wish to have the shared folders feature, you can install the driver by
running vmware-config-tools.pl again after making sure that gcc, binutils, make
and the kernel sources for your running kernel are installed on your machine.
These packages are available on your distribution's installation CD.
