Issue

Symantec Endpoint Protection Manager (SEPM) Version 11x,  12.1 and SEP12.1 RU1,LiveUpdate returns result as no updates available

Error

Live update failed with error code 4

Environment

Windows Server Family and SEPM 12.1 or higher

SEP 11.x Clients and SEPM 11.x Servers

Cause

LiveUpdate's Product Inventory is corrupted.

Solution

1. Issue on SEP 11.x client:

Copy C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Symantec\LiveUpdate\Product.Inventory.LiveUpdate from a known good SEP client to the problematic one (solution not applicable to SEP 12.1 clients as they don't not use LiveUpdater anymore). Run LiveUpdate to update definitions again. For clients running on newer operating systems like Vista or Windows 7 the Product.Inventory.LiveUpdate will be located in C:\ProgramData\Symantec\\LiveUpdate\

2. Issue on SEPM Server (both 11.x and 12.1)

Re-register Liveupdater with SEPM by following the procedure (here for SEP version 12.1 or higher) :

* Open a command prompt window, then browse to:

For 32 bit Operating System
* C:\Program Files\Symantec\Symantec Endpoint Protection Manager\bin

and for the 64 bit

* C:\Program Files (X86)\Symantec\Symantec Endpoint Protection Manager\bin

* Execute lucatalog -cleanup
* Execute lucatalog -forcedupdate
* Run LiveUpdate from the console or execute LUALL.exe to verify that there are no errors.
