Error

The Backup Exec Archiving Option installation cannot register the DNS Alias with the Domain Name Server.

Cause

The Backup Exec Archiving Option failed to automatically add the DNS alias.

Solution

Manually uninstall and then reinstall the Archiving Option per the steps below:

1. On the computer that is the target of the remote or command line installation, open the Backup Exec Administration Console.

2. On the Tools menu, click ‘Install Options and License Keys’ on this Media Server.

3. Do one of the following:

If license keys were previously entered, select the license keys of the Exchange Mailbox Archiving Option and the File System Archiving Option (if it was installed). Click Remove, and then click Next.
If Backup Exec is installed as a trial version, click Next. On the Configure Options dialog box, uncheck the Exchange Mailbox Archiving Option and the File System Archiving Option (if checked).

4. Continue to click Next until the installation review dialog box appears.

5. Ensure that the Exchange Mailbox Archiving Option and the File System Archiving Option are not installed.

6. Click Install.

7. When the installation completes, close the Administration Console.

8. Go to the directory in which the hosts file is located, which is usually at %windir%\system32\drivers\etc\hosts.

9. Open the hosts file in notepad, and remove any entries made by Backup Exec.

The following entries are examples:

# Created by Backup Exec Archiving Option
127.0.0.1       EnterpriseVaultSite
# Created by Backup Exec Archiving Option
127.0.0.1       BE-MyMachineAlias.mydomain.com

10. Save the hosts file.

11. Open the Backup Exec Administration Console.

12. On the Tools menu, click ‘Install Options and License Keys’ on this Media Server.

13. Do one of the following:

Enter the license keys for the Exchange Mailbox Archiving Option, and the File System Archiving Option (if required) and then click Next.  If Backup Exec is installed as a trial version, click Next. On the Configure Options dialog box, select the Exchange Mailbox Archiving Option, and the File System Archiving Option (if required).

14. Continue with the installation as prompted until it is completed.
