Problem

When backing up Virtual Machine (VM) located on an ESX / ESXi 4.1 host using AVVI, backup fails with "Unable to open a disk of the virtual machine".

Cause

On installing the AVVI license, VMware binaries get created in a folder name 'VMware' under C:\Program files\Symantec\Backup Exec. Also a registry key namely 'VMware Agent' get created under Computer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Symantec\Backup Exec For Windows\Backup Exec\Engine\. If this binary folder or registry key is not getting created on installation of license then backup job is likely to fail.

Solution

Ensure AVVI license is installed on BE 2010. 'VMware' folder is created under C:\Program files\Symantec\Backup Exec and 'Vmware Agent' key is present under Computer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Symantec\Backup Exec For Windows\Backup Exec\Engine\.
If the license is installed but Binaries and registry is not present, then remove the AVVI license and install it again.
For the Click Tools, Install Options and License Keys on this Media Server, remove the AVVI license and click Next. Make sure to deselect the Agent for VMware Virtual Infrastructure (AVVI) under trialware, then click Next to complete the wizard. If not able to uncheck the AVVI after removing the license key then remove all the Backup Exec license and install BE in evaluation mode.
While installing BE in evaluation mode, in the license installation wizard remove all the licenses including the core license but uncheck only the AVVI Agents from the list. Complete the installation wizard.
Now, once again got to Tools, Install Options and License Keys on this Media Server, install all the BE core, Agent and Option license including the AVVI license and complete the wizard.
(If prompted for BE installation media, provide it and if prompt to reboot, reboot the BE server.)
