Clients receive error saving Office files to a NetApp Filer while using Symantec AntiVirus for Network Attached Storage 5.2.x

Issue



When using Symantec AntiVirus for Network Attached Storage 5.2 with NetApp Filer some clients are reporting that while working on an Office file, they receive an error while trying to save their changes to the Filer.  This is especially the case for Excel and PowerPoint files.


Error



  • Scan Engine logs may show Generic 6 errors

Environment



  • ONTAP 7.2 or newer
  • Symantec AntiVirus for Network Attached Storage 5.2 (Symantec Scan Engine 5.2)

Cause



Applications like Office, use a "delete on close" feature before renaming the tmp file.  Starting with Data ONTAP 7.2 the client/applications are allowed to open/rename a file while a virus scan for that file is already in progress.  This opens a window for application errors, if the client attempts to delete or rename a file while AV scanning is still being performed.  Basically causing a race condition.  The larger the file in question, the more likely the issue could occur.  Since large files take longer to scan, which would create a larger window for the race condition to occur.


Solution
