Issue



When restoring a SQL Server database the job fails with the above error.


Error



Final error: 0xe000848c - Unable to attach to a resource. Make sure that all selected resources exist and are online, and then try again. If the server or resource no longer exists, remove it from the selection list. Edit the selection list properties, click the View Selection Details tab, and then remove the resource.

Environment



SQL Server 2005 on a Windows Server 2003 32bit. Other compatible Windows versions may apply.

 


Cause



The SQL Server restore job may be being redirected to a SQL server and fail with the previously mentioned error.

After several attempts, on the SQL server Management Studio, the Database in question may be shown in the graphical interface as hanging in “(Restoring…)”.

 


Solution



  1. Remove the database showing “(Restoring…)”,
     
  2. Re-create the database


     
  3. Run a backup job to test its consistency.
     
  4. If the backup job completes successfully, run the restore job which should complete successfully as well.
