Unable to create a Deduplication Storage Folder. "Gathering Information" is displayed in the Backup Exec User Interface (BE UI) for long time.

Technical Solution


Creating Deduplication Storage folder in Backup Exec remains in "Gathering Information" stage for a very long time (sometimes more than an hour) and eventually fails with following error "An error occurred while creating the deduplication storage folder".


Location of pdde-config.log: [Dedup_Folder]\log\pdde-config.log

From the pdde-config.log: 

Executing spoold.exe --start...
Starting service spoold: ......failed
Error: 1: The spoold service could not start in a timely fashion. The service is currently in a starting state and returned an exit status of 0 to the Service Control Manager.
ERR: "C:\Program Files\Symantec\Backup Exec"\spoold.exe --start failed: 1 


A software conflict may cause this issue. 


This issues is now resolved in Backup Exec 2010 R3 Hotfix 159965
