Microsoft SQL Database fails to restore:  "The media family on device is incorrectly formed. SQL Server cannot process this media family"


Error



The media family on device is incorrectly formed. SQL Server cannot process this media family.

Error seen in SQL output, dbclient log, and SQL Agent View Status:

INFO ODBC return code <-1>, SQL State <01000>, SQL Message <3211><[Microsoft][ODBC SQL Server Driver][SQL Server]100 percent processed.>.

INFO SQL Message <3241><[Microsoft][ODBC SQL Server Driver][SQL Server]The media family on device 'VNBU0-10120-10148-1302289400' is incorrectly formed. SQL Server cannot process this media family.>

INFO SQL Message <3013><[Microsoft][ODBC SQL Server Driver][SQL Server]RESTORE DATABASE is terminating abnormally.>
 


Environment



Master Server: Windows 2008 R2

Client: Windows 2008 R2 w MSSQL 2008 and higher

Netbackup 7.01 and above 


Cause



1. Windows 2008 R2 is DNS sensitive to host names.

2. MSSQL is attempting to set maxtransfer and buffer

Solution



All three steps are required to resolve

1. Modify the host names to match dns

2. Modify MAXTRANSFERSIZE to 0

3. Modify the NUMBUFS to 1
