After migrating to Symantec Endpoint Protection 12.1, Windows Action Center reports "Turn on Symantec Endpoint Protection"

Issue



Symantec Endpoint Protection (SEP) is turned on and enabled, yet the Windows Action Center reports the following information under Control Panel > System and Security > Action Center after the upgrade from SEP 11.x to 12.1:

“Windows Defender and Symantec Endpoint Protection both report that they are turned off.”

 


Error



“Spyware and unwanted software protection (Important)” displays “Windows Defender and Symantec Endpoint Protection both report that they are turned off.”

 


Environment



  • Windows 7
  • SEP 12.1, versions earlier than RU1 MP1

 


Cause



During the migration from 11.x to 12.1, the 11.x client is not unregistered from the Windows Action Center at the appropriate time, resulting in the Windows Action Center reporting that SEP is off.

 


Solution



This issue has been resolved with SEP 12.1 RU1 MP1 (12.1.1101.401). Read the Knowledge Base article Obtaining the latest version of Symantec Endpoint Protection or Symantec Network Access Control for information on obtaining the newest release.

To work around the issue in older versions, run a repair on the client in order to re-register the SEP 12.1 client with the Windows Action Center. 

To run a repair on the client

  1. In the Windows Control Panel, click Programs > Programs and Features.
  2. Click Symantec Endpoint Protection. 
  3. Click Change.
  4. Click Next.
  5. Choose Repair, click Next, and then click Install.
