Issue

When attempting to install PGP Desktop for Windows and you receive an error that you have insufficient privileges and installation aborts.

Error

“Error 1321.  Windows Installer has insufficient privileges to modify this file.  C:\Program Files (x86)\PGP Corporation\PGP Desktop\PGP Portable\autorun.inf.

Environment

  • Windows 7
  • Windows  XP
  • Windows Vista

Cause

This can be caused by security software such as McAfee HIPS blocking the AutoRun feature. Security programs typically block AutoRun to prevent a malware program from hijacking it.

Solution

Temporarily disable/unload any security programs (e.g. Anti-Virus or Internet security) programs prior to installing PGP Desktop.  After installation has completed successfully, you can re-enable/resume the security program.
