Technical Solution

Creating a backup job with the Agent for VMware Virtualization using only SAN as the transport mode on a French Windows 2008 environment results in the following error:

0xe000958b:SAN Transport mode is not supported

The problem occurs if the vCenter and Backup Exec servers are installed on a French Windows 2008 Operating System.

The vstorage API creates temporary folders under c:\windows\temp in order to perform SAN mode backup. The name of the folder is generated using the credential of the process starting the operation. Beremote, the backup exec remote agent, is the process initiating this operation and is started with the "local system" account resulting in a "vmware-system" temporary folder.

On a French system, this account is incorrectly translated to “vmware-Système”.

This issue has been resolved in Backup Exec 2010 R3 Service Pack 2

Following possible steps can be taken.

  1. Install English Lanuguage pack on the French operating system.
  2. Install the Backup Exec media server on an English Operating System with a French Language pack.
  3. Change the credential used for the Backup Exec Remote Agent service on the media server such that "local system" is no longer used. You might need to give this account local admin rights and vmware admin privileges.
