Issue

The sharepoint backup fails with the error mention below:

Final error: 0xe0000f04 - The media server could not connect to the remote computer. The remote computer may not be running the Backup Exec Remote Agent for Windows/Linux. Make sure that the correct version of the Remote Agent is installed and running on the target computer.

Error

Environment

Sharepoint 2007

Cause

When a media server makes a connection with a remote system, the initial connection will be initiated on port 10000. The Remote Agent will be listening for connections on this pre-defined port.

If the default port for remote agent communication (i.e.: 10000) has been changed on the front end and backend server.

The backup would fail with the above mentioned error.

NOTE: This can also happen if the Media Server, and the servers in the SharePoint Farm can't ping each other by hostname.

Solution

1) Open the services file on the front end/backend server under:

<systemroot>\System32\Drivers\etc

2) Look for any entries as:

ndmp 9000/tcp #Network Data Management Protocol

* 9000 is an example, it can be user defined.

3) Delete this entry.

4) Save the host file.

5) Restart the Remote Agent Service.

6) Re-try the backup.
