This article details the steps to use the Apple Recovery Partition with PGP WDE 10.2 and Symantec Endpoint Encryption 8.2. While the disk is encrypted by PGP WDE or Symantec Endpoint Encryption, you cannot access the Recovery HD partition to restore the system. The reason to disallow this access is that the Apple Recovery Partition tools may not be able to recognize the format of the encrypted drive.

If the Apple Recovery Partition tools cannot recognize the drive, the Recovery HD may format the drive and re-install the OS instead repairing the operating system files which will lead to total loss of data on the drive.

To use the Apple Recovery HD on a system with PGP WDE 10.2 or SEE FD Mac 10.2 installed, you must first decrypt the drive and then use the Apple Recovery tools.
