Problem
During the backup of a Windows Virtual Machine in which the names of the .vmdk files contain an extended character set, the backup fails with the following error:
Error
Failed to mount one or more virtual disk images:
Error mounting disk(s): UNKNOWN_ERROR (0x00000002).
Cause
This problem is caused by the underlying deduplication software when trying to mount a .vmdk file. This only occurs when using GRT to back up the Virtual Machine.
Solution
Workarounds:
Rename the .vmdk file so it does not contain extended characters.
Do not use GRT when backing up this Virtual Machine.
Solution:
This issue is now resolved in Backup Exec 2010 R3 Hotfix 159965
