When performing Hyper-V GRT backups to disk all Virtual Machine Backups complete with exception "Failed to mount one or more virtual disk images" when the Backup Exec media server is unable to mount the VHD file and collect the GRT Granular Restore information.

Error

V-79-57344-38721 - Failed to mount one or more virtual disk images:

Environment

Backup Exec 2010

Windows 2008 64 Bit Media Server

Cause

The Backup Exec media server is unable to mount the VHD file to collect the GRT information. The Microsoft Virtual Server 2005 VHDmount tool is unable to mount the VHD disk file.

Debugging the Backup Exec remote agent (beremote.exe) on the Backup Exec media server the following mount errors are observed after Backup Exec attempts retry mounting the VHD file 10 times:

BEREMOTE Debug

[mounter]      - MSVSVirtualSystem::MountDisks() - Enter
[mounter]      - MSVSVirtualSystem::MountDisks: file "D:\TEMP\Backup Exec\01cc5be51e3aa520\Virtual Files\I\Hyper-V\VM_GUEST\C_drive.vhd" Signature: 0XE6C88AC3 Partition Count: 1 Dynamic: False
- Failed to mount VHD (0x00000037)
- Retry attempt 1 for mount of D:\TEMP\Backup Exec\01cc5be51e3aa520\Virtual Files\I\Hyper-V\VM_GUEST\C_drive.vhd
- Failed to mount VHD (0x00000037)
- Retry attempt 9 for mount of D:\TEMP\Backup Exec\01cc5be51e3aa520\Virtual Files\I\Hyper-V\VM_GUEST\C_drive.vhd
- Failed to mount VHD (0x00000037)
[mounter]      - MSVSVirtualSystem::MountDisk() - mount of "D:\TEMP\Backup Exec\01cc5be51e3aa520\Virtual Files\I\Hyper-V\VM_GUEST\C_drive.vhd" failed with error code: 55

NOTE: VHDmount is required only if the media server runs Microsoft Windows 2003 or Windows 2008 without the Hyper-V role installed. See related Documents.

Manually attempting to mount a VHD file on the Backup Exec media server with VHDmount.exe fails with:

The Virtual Hard Disk is successfully plugged in as a virtual disk device. However, not all the volumes on the disk were successfully mounted.

OR

Failed to plug in the Virtual Hard Disk

Solution

If the Backup Exec media server operating system is Windows 2008 64-bit and supports Virtualization install the Hyper-V role.

For Backup Exec media server running Windows 2008 (No Virtualization Support), Windows 2008 32-bit, or Windows 2003  uninstall/reinstall Microsoft Virtual Server 2005 R2 Sp1 VHdmount and install the following Microsoft Virtual Server 2005 R2 SP1 update:
