Issue

Backups are failing with error message .

Error

Error EC8F17B7: Cannot create recovery points for job: Drive Backup of (C:\).Warning AC8F1FCC: The type of errors encountered indicate that this hard disk drive is about to fail. It is recommended that this drive be replaced soon. To ignore this error and backup this drive, select "Ignore bad sectors during copy" from the advanced options in the Drive Backup Wizard.Error E0BB0083: Unable to create incremental recovery point. (UMI:V-281-3215-6071)

Cause

It is suspected bad disk geometry. Review the related links for additional causes.

Solution

To determine if disk geometry is the issue do the following:

1. Run partinfo.exe
Location for partinfo.exe :
(x86) > C:\Program Files\Symantec\Symantec System Recovery\Utility
(x64)> C:\Program Files(x86)\Symantec\Symantec System Recovery\Utility
2. Review partinfo.txt file by comparing the Partition Information for Disk #, where # is the disk number, 'Total sectors,' value  for each partition with its corresponding, Volume Boot Record, 'Total NTFS Sectors,' value, the difference should be a value of one.

For example :

Disk Geometry Information for Disk 1         Sector Count: 1,331,200   (82 Cylinders, 255 Heads, 63 Sectors/Track)
Signature: 182A8908
Detected Sector Size:   512
Detected Alignment:     None
.........................................................................................................................
System               Part Table LBA   # Boot     BCyl Head Sect FS      ECyl Head Sect       StartSect         NumSects
========================================================================================================
 On Disk Values:  0     0         0          0            1     1        0B                  649   63  32               32        1,331,168

WARNING: Invalid End CHS values in partition above.
WARNING: Begin CHS does not match start sector LBA in partition above.
WARNING: End CHS does not match calculated end LBA in partition above.

3. Use a file base backup utility (e.g. NTbackup) to create a backup of the data on the drive.

4. See if disabling the drive within the BIOS, reboot back into the BIOS and force a redetection properly then detect the partitions on this drive.

5. If step 4 fails, rebuild the file structure on the disk, and then restore the drive's data from step 1's backup.

Note: You may also try to shrink the volume before rebuilding the file structure on the particular disk. For more information on shrink volume refer the article in related article section below.
