NetBackup Media Server Deduplication (MSDP) configuration via 'Storage Server Configuration Wizard' on Windows platforms fails 'RDSM has encountered an STS error: failed to update the storage server configuration due to unsupported platform, invalid configuration or system error'; due to permissions problems.


Error



Additionally:

-  the NetBackup Deduplication Engine service may hang in a 'Starting' state in Windows services.

- or the NetBackup Deduplication Engine service may start and then stop shortly after starting.


Environment



2 NetBackup 7.x master server domains each with a Media Server Deduplicaton (MSDP) media server. All Microsoft Windows based.


Cause



Microsoft Windows permissions issues with the user account starting the NetBackup Deduplication Engine.


Solution



1. Change the account the NetBackup Deduplication Engine service starts with to an account that is a member of only the local Administrators group, remove all other group membership.

2. Do not create the storage and/or database directory paths prior to starting the 'Storage Server Configuration Wizard' to configure MSDP. Let the wizard create them for you.
