Backup of virtual machines using the Agent for VMware Virtual Infrastructure (AVVI) randomly fail with "Error. Cannot backup directory \zzzVirtApp000zzz and its subdirectories"

When backing up virtual machines with either Exchange, Active Directory or SQL installed the backup may fail with the following error.
Completed status: Failed
Final error: 0x3 - The system cannot find the path specified.
Final error category: Other Errors
Backup- VMVCB::\\vcenter\VCGuestVm\DATACENTER NAME\vm\VMNAME
- Error. Cannot backup directory \zzzVirtApp000zzz and its subdirectories.
This issue has only been reported in Backup Exec 2010 R3
This issue can be caused by an issue with the VMDK getting reported as an incorrect size and disk format.
A hotfix is now available for this issue in the current version(s) of the product(s) mentioned at the end of this article. Refer to the Hotfix link under Related Documents at the end of this article to obtain the hotfix needed to resolve the issue.
AVVI: backup of VM intermittently detects the VMDK size incorrectly.
