This document was created to explain in general the supported path for Symantec Endpoint Protection Manager (SEPM)
RTM - Release To Manufacturing
MR - Maintenance Release (Now replaced by the term RU)
RU - Release Update
MP - Maintenance Patch
PP - Point Patch
SEPM - Symantec Endpoint Protection Manager
SEP - Symantec Endpoint Protection client
Greater detail for abbreviations:
RTM was only the very first version of Symantec Endpoint Protection (SEP). SEPM RTM was 11.0.776.942 and SEP RTM was 11.0.780.1109
MR was the main release of the SEP or SEPM version (This started from MR1 and ended with MR4)
RU is the equivalent to MR, but RU has now replaced MR after version MR4. Therefore the next main release after MR4 was RU5 (Currently, at the time of writing, RU7MP1 is the latest available release).
MP is a minor release for the specific MR versions (It never “exists” without MR). There have been already many versions with MP releases.
For example: MR2 MP1 (11.0.2010.25), MR2 MP2 (11.0.2020.56), RU6 MP2 (11.0.6200.754) etc
There are few versions with letters incorporated such as “a” at the end (For example: RU6a) – This is the release with 1 or 2 important updates, released just after the last update. The version without the letter “a” has been removed now.
Example: Just after the MR4 MP1, the MR4 MP1a was released and MR4 MP1 was removed. The same applies to version RU6 and RU6a.
PP is a small update for a MR, RU or MP release (Examples include: MR1 PP1, RU5 PP1, RU6 MP2 PP1)
About the installation:
Any version of RTM, MR, RU or MP (For either the SEPM and or SEP) can be installed, since this is the full and complete release.
PP can only be installed over a specific MR, RU or MP, that it was designed for, because PP is typically a small patch for that build.
About the migration:
In general, it is possible to migrate to every RU or MR version (without MP or PP) from any previous version.
For example: Supported migration paths can be from RTM to MR1, from MR2 MP1 to MR4, from RU5 PP1 to RU6/RU6a.
However it is best to avoid migrations between the versions released within a longer time period – For example, migrating directly from RTM to RU6/RU6a is not advised.
To migrate to a MP version, first migrate to the corresponding build such as MR or RU version. For example, migration to RU6 MP2 is supported only from RU6, RU6a and RU6 MP1. Migration to MR4 MP1a is supported only from MR4 and MR4 MP1 etc.
Example: If the version currently being used is MR4 MP2 and considering to migrate to RU6 MP2, first migrate to RU6/RU6a and then to RU6 MP2.
Note: For SEP clients, you can upgrade from any previous version - but it is recommended that you upgrade to RUx, then to RUx MPx - since this is the upgrade path that has been fully tested.
For SEPM, you have to upgrade to RUx first, then RUx MPx.
