This article describes how to uninstall and reinstall LiveUpdate on a computer where Symantec Endpoint Protection Manager (SEPM) 12.1 is installed.

The version of LiveUpdate that is currently installed is not the version that ships with Symantec Endpoint Protection (SEP) 12.1. This can cause LiveUpdate to not function correctly for SEP clients or SEPM.

LiveUpdate versions

The correct versions of LiveUpdate for SEP are as follows:

Uninstall and re-install LiveUpdate

Note: You should run the LiveUpdate installer from the installation directory.

  1. Click Start > Control Panel.
  2. Click Add/Remove Programs. ('Programs and Features' in Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008)
  3. Click LiveUpdate.
  4. Click Change/Remove.
  5. Follow the on-screen instructions to uninstall LiveUpdate.
  6. Delete the following files and folders (some of these may already be deleted after the uninstall):

    32-bit OSs:

C:\Program Files\Symantec\LiveUpdate (delete the entire folder)
    C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Symantec\LiveUpdate

Delete all these files: Product.Inventory.LiveUpdate and Settings.LiveUpdate

    64-bit OSs:

    C:\ProgramData\Symantec\LiveUpdate (delete the entire folder)
    C:\Users\All Users\Symantec\LiveUpdate

Delete all these files: Product.Inventory.LiveUpdate and Settings.LiveUpdate.
  7. Install LiveUpdate (<drive>:\SEPM\lusetup.exe) from the original SEPM install media, FileConnect, or read LiveUpdate Windows client for Endpoint Protection Manager 12.1.

Register SEPM with LiveUpdate

  1. Click Start > Run.
  2. Type cmd, then click OK. This will bring up a command prompt.
  3. At the command prompt type cd and the path to lucatalog.exe, as shown, for the correct SEP version and OS:

    • Enterprise Edition: cd C:\Program Files\Symantec\Symantec Endpoint Protection Manager\bin
    • Enterprise Edition 64-bit: cd C:\Program Files (x86)\Symantec\Symantec Endpoint Protection Manager\bin
    • Small Business Edition: cd C:\Program Files\Symantec\Symantec Protection Center\bin
    • Small Business Edition 64-bit: cd C:\Program Files (x86)\Symantec\Symantec Protection Center\bin
  4. Type lucatalog.exe -cleanup. When the command line path returns, cleanup is done.
  5. Type lucatalog.exe -forcedupdate.

If BackupExec is also installed, re-register it with LiveUpdate from the command prompt (the location depends on the version of BE).

    C:\Program Files\Symantec\Backupexec\beupdateops -addbe OR
    C:\Program Files\Symantec\Backup Exec\beupdateops -addbe OR
    C:\LU\beupdateops -addbe -optout

If Symantec Mail Security for Microsoft Exchange (SMSMSE) is also installed, re-register it with LiveUpdate from the command prompt.

From the command prompt, in the folder "C:\Windows\system32", run the following command:

    regsvr32.exe "C:\Program Files\Symantec\SMSMSE\<version number>\Server\SAVFMSELU.dll"

  6. Click Start > Run.
  7. Type luall and click OK to test LiveUpdate.

Note: You may also want to test LiveUpdate's functionality in SEPM. Click the Admin tab > Servers > Local Site > Download LiveUpdate Content.
