Problem

SUSE 10 backups fail because the SMRD process is not connecting  to the Responder.

Error

SUSE 10 backups fail w/  0xe000fe2d - The backup of the item is bad. V-79-57344-65069

Solution

GroupWise backups fail. To troubleshoot the issue:

1. Use SgMon.exe to perform a live debug of the backup operation.

2. Review the resulting sgmon.log file (\Program Files\Symantec\Backup Exec\logs\xxxxx-sgmon.log where xxxx is the media server hostname) for the time stamp associated with  this entry:

            Function called: SMDR_SurrogateCalling

3. Log on to the Linux server and check  /var/log/messages for the same date/time (some sites have this log on automatic rotation. The actual log you need to check might be an earlier compressed instance of this log).

4. If you see the following messages then there is probably an issue with SMDR. You may need to check the log for other instances of these two messages occuring within the same second or two.

smdr; Could not start the Responder to localhost. cCode = 0xfffeffa0

Engage vendor support to fix SMDR.

Refer to your Suse Linux vendor for assistance with addressing the SMDR issue.
