AVVI based GRT enaled backup of multiple Virtual Machines selected in the same job fails on second or third virtual machine in the selection list with 0xe000846b - Remote Agent not detected on virtual center

Technical Solution


When backing up multiple virtual machines (VM) in a single Agent for VMware Virtual Infrastructure (AVVI) based backup the job backs up one or two virtual machines and then fail with error given below. This happens only with Granular Recovery  Technology (GRT) option is selected in the backup job.


Error in the Backup job log:

Final error: 0xe000846b - The resource could not be backed up because an error occurred while connecting to the Backup Exec for Windows Servers Remote Agent.
Make sure that the correct version of the Remote Agent is installed and running on the target computer.  If the server or resource no longer exists, remove it from the selection list. Edit the selection list properties, click the View Selection Details tab, and then remove the resource.

Error in the bengine debug log from Backup Exec server:

ERROR: ndmpcSendRequest(): timeout waiting for reply from control connection


A hotfix is now available for this issue in the current version(s) of the product(s) mentioned at the end of this article. Refer to the Hotfix link under Related Articles at the end of this article to obtain the hotfix needed to resolve the issue.

If the issue persists after applying the Hotfix follow the steps provided below on Backup Exec server: 

1. Stop all Backup Exec services.

2. Open Registry Editor.

Warning: Incorrect use of the Windows registry editor may prevent the operating system from functioning properly. Great care should be taken when making changes to a Windows registry. Registry modifications should only be carried-out by persons experienced in the use of the registry editor application. It is recommended that a complete backup of the registry and workstation be made prior to making any registry changes.

3. Browse to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Symantec\Backup Exec For Windows\Backup Exec\Engine\Agents and chaneg the value of dword "NDMP connect open time out seconds" from 30 decimal to 120 decimal.

4. Start all Backup Exec services and re-run the backup job.

5. If the issue persists, increase the value of the above registry entry by 60 and re-try the backup. Increase the value till the issue is resolved.
