Problem

Catalog Job might fail during a catalog of B2D or Tape

Solution

INVENTORY TAPE/B2D :

  • Put the Tape/B2D into Retired Media Set  from Media tab
  • Right Click on Tape/B2D -> Associate with  Media Set > Select Retired media
  • Delete that Tape/B2D
  • Restart BE services
  • Tools ->Be services -> Restart all services
  • Run an Inventory Job to get the Tape/B2D detected.
  • Retry the Catalog Job.

SLOW CATALOG :

  • Tools -> options -> catalogs -> Uncheck Use Storage Media Based Catalogs
  • Restart BE services
  • Tools > BE services > Restart all services
  • Retry Catalog Job

Note : Tapes/B2D which contain NDMP Backup sets cannot be slow catalogged.

RENAME CATALOG FOLDER :

  • C:\Program files\Symantec\Backup Exec\Catalogs (Path might differ)
  • Rename catalogs folder(Eg. Catlogs_Old)
  • Create a folder named Catalogs on the same place
  • Restart BE services (Tools -> BE Services -> Restart all Services)
  • Retry the Catalog Job

Note : Once the Catalog is done and data is restored make sure to bring back the old Catalog folder since that contains the catalog Information of the older Backup Sets also. The content i.e Catalog files from the make shift Catalog folder can be copied inside the original Catalog folder if similar xml/fh file did not exist inside it. A Backup Exec Service Restart would be required for the original Catalog folder to come into play.

REBUILD CATALOG INDEX:-

  • Open Command Prompt
  • Change Directory to Backup Exec Installation Path
  • Run CatRebuildIndex -r
  • Restart the BE Services from Tools -> BE Services
  • Check the restore selection in the Restore Job Properties.

Note : The above would only come in picture when the catalog files (xml and fh) exists for that Backup Set. You can check the Catalog xml file by highlighting the Backup Set and checking the pane which displays details of the set.
