Problem



Backup Exec 2010 R3 SP1 (Hotfix 168343) fails to install. The following errors are noted


Error



Error “LU1812: A program that was part of this update failed when it ran. This update was not applied.”

Referring bkupinst.htm found in "C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Symantec\Backup Exec\Logs"  for Windows Server 2003 and “C:\ProgramData\ Symantec\Backup Exec\Logs” for Windows Server 2008 gives the following error message

Error 1706.No valid source could be found for product Symantec Backup Exec. The Windows Installer cannot continue.

Environment



Windows Server 2003, Windows Server 2003 R2

Windows Server 2008, Windows Server 2008 R2
Backup Exec 2010 R3

Cause



Missing Source path in Registry.


Solution



This error may appear when the original installation files are not available. When running the install of Sp1, the setup program looks in the Windows registry for the original install location and will generate the error if the setup files have been moved, deleted, or are unavailable.

1.      On the server receiving the error message, click Start | Run  Type regedit and click OK
Warning: Incorrect use of the Windows registry editor may prevent the operating system from functioning properly. Great care should be taken when making changes to the Windows registry. Registry modifications should only be carried-out by persons experienced in the use of the registry editor application. It is recommended that a complete backup of the registry and workstation be made prior to making any registry changes.
2.      Locate HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Symantec\Backup Exec for Windows\Backup Exec\13.x\Install
3.      Modify the value of Source Path  to the Folder containing the installation files for Backup Exec
 Note:
a.  For Backup Exec 2010 R3  32-bit installation media the path would be <Drive name>\BE\WinNT\Install\BE32\Install\Media
b. For Backup Exec 2010  R3 64-bit installation media the path would be <Drive name>\BE\WinNT\Install\BEx64\Install\Media.
4. Restart all Backup Exec services on the computer the value was modified on, and then rerun setup.
5. If the same error reoccurs, try to manually download the SP1 and install the same. If it   asks for the Source file “Symantec Backup Exec for Windows Server.msi” please point to the folder containing the installation files for Backup Exec
Note:
a.  For Backup Exec 2010 R3  32-bit installation media the path would be <Drive name>\BE\WinNT\Install\BE32\Install\Media
b. For Backup Exec 2010  R3 64-bit installation media the path would be <Drive name>\BE\WinNT\Install\BEx64\Install\Media.
