Problem
A NetApp NDMP backup job fails when the Verify option is enabled in the job. This may occur when many (Over 200) specific sub-folders are selected under a volume OR when an entire volume is selected first that contains (Over 200) sub folders and some folders are then excluded.
Error
The NDMP server returned a restore error. See the NDMP Log for more information.
Environment
Backup Exec 2010
NetApp FAS 2020 or 3020
Ontap 7.2.7.2.5.1
Cause
A NetApp NDMP verify operation is a NDMP restore job with a variable option not to physically restore the data. During the Verify operation the following NDMP error are generated on the NetApp filer and returned to Backup Exec:
Backup Exec and NetApp NDMP Log Error:
NDMP Log Message: RESTORE : ERROR: All sub trees must be restored to the same destination directory on the file system
NDMP Log Message: RESTORE : ERROR: /subfolder1 was targeted to : /vol/VOL1/
NDMP Log Message: RESTORE : ERROR: / was targeted to : /vol/VOL1
Additionally in the Backup Exec Debug or live Backup Exec SGMON debug log the NetApp NDMP variable "MULTI_SUBTREE_NAMES" may contain a large amount of selections or sub-folder selections.
ENGINE: [loops] - MULTI_SUBTREE_NAMES=subfolder1 subfolder2 , etc.
The Backup Exec job failure is due to the NDMP Selection list containing more thand 200 specific selections.
Solution
Edit the Backup Exec NDMP selection list and select the entire volume first then create excludes to excludes specifc folders from the backup.
See releated documents on how to create NDMP Includes/Excludes and patterns.
