After upgrading to Backup Exec 2010 R3, and Exchange is on a Windows 2003 R2 x64 machine, GRT jobs targeted to tape may fail with the error "V-79-57344-766 - Cannot log on to MAPI with the specified credentials".

Error

V-79-57344-766 - Cannot log on to MAPI with the specified credentials. Review the resource credentials for the job, and then run the job again.

Environment

Exchange 2003 / 2007 on Windows 2003 R2 x64.

Cause

Upon investigation it has been discovered that WmiPrvSe.exe has an open handle on ese.dll in the "OnHostTemp" directory.

To verify if this is the issue do the following on the Exchange server:

  1. Download and run Process Explorer from http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb896653.aspx.
  2. When Process Explorer starts, click Find > Find Handle or DLL.
  3. Type ese.dll in the Handle or DLL substring
  4. Click Search
  5. Check to see if wmiprvse.exe is holding ese.dll. see Figure 1.
