Issue

When trying to enroll a client that was previously enrolled you receive the error "An error occurred: Item already exists".

Error

Cause

This error can occur due to the following reasons:

  • A PGP key exists for the user on PGP Universal Server and it is a different key mode than the one being used when trying to enroll with.
  • The keymode for the key on PGP Universal Server has been disabled.

Example:  The user's key present on PGP Universal Server is an SKM key, but in the user's policy (Consumer Policy > Under Key Management), SKM is disabled.

Solution

To resolve this issue, use one of the following:

  1. Enable the SKM keymode in the user's Consumer Policy and then try to enroll the user.
  2. Set the key mode for the user to match the existing key on PGP Universal Server.
