Issue

Agent for VMware Virtual Infrastructure (AVVI) backup fails with "Error 0xe00095a4- The operation failed because the vCenter or ESX server reported a problem creating or accessing one or more files."

Error

Final error: 0xe00095a4 - The operation failed because the Virtual Center or ESX server reported a problem creating or accessing one or more files needed.

SGMON debug log shows the following error:

[Servername\vmvcb]         - SymVmTools: WaitForTaskCompleteEx: File [DATASTORE] FOLDERNAME/VMNAME_2.vmdk is larger than the maximum size supported by datastore 'DATASTORE <185>
[Servername\vmvcb]         - SymVmTools: WaitForTaskCompleteEx: SYM_VMC_ERROR:  TASK_REACHED_ERROR_STATE
[Servername\vmvcb]         - SymVmTools: CreateVm: SYM_VMC_ERROR:  TASK_REACHED_ERROR_STATE
[Servername\vmvcb]         - SymVmTools: CreateVirtualMachine: SYM_VMC_ERROR:  TASK_REACHED_ERROR_STATE
[Servername\vmvcb]         - VM_VCBPROXY_FS::CreateVirtualMachine: failed, result = 0X24
[Servername\vmvcb]         - VM_VCBPROXY_FS::CreateVirtualMachine: vmcCreateVirtualMachineEx reported: File [DATASTORE] FOLDERNAME/VMNAME_2.vmdk is larger than the maximum size supported by datastore 'DATASTORE, <0XB9>

Cause

Different Datastore block sizes in VMware limit the maximum file size that can be used.   In some circumstances the VMware Snapshot process will be unable to create snapshots of a virtual machine (VM) if the VMDK sizes are close to the maximum file size for the datastore.

Solution

Confirm via the vSphere client that Snapshot cannot be created against the affected VM (Note: if the Snapshot can be created using VSphere then the problem experienced may relate to a different condition.)

Review the following VMware KB articles for details of the limitation for different block sizes and methods to solve the problem
