Cause

Windows 2008 R2 OS Level functions are not always able to detect an organizations proxy server using the WinHTTP 5.1 implementation. Due to this, some of the base functions of Windows 2008 R2 are not working correctly. The SPC Web Console proxy settings do not apply to the OS Level.

Solution

NOTE: This issue has been resolved in SPC 2.1 Maintenance Pack 1 (MP1) (SPC 2.1.1.3012)
Refer to TECH176838 for access to the manual update file, if needed.

If you can not, or do not wish to update your system, please use the attached script to configure your OS leve proxy settings to address some of these issues.

---
To configure the base Windows 2008 R2 proxy settings the attached PowerShell script can be used.

This script will setup Windows 2008 R2 for usage in a corporate proxy server environment. Authenticated proxy settings are not included in the NETSH command structure, so additional configuration may be needed on the proxy server to allow the un-authenticated system to communicate with the internet.

The following procedure can be used to configure the OS level proxy settings.

  1. Save the signed SPC Proxy Settings Utility file attached to this technote to a CD/DVD, USB device, or VM Datastore.
Use the ZIP file when using removeable media. Use the ISO when you will be mounting the ISO in a Virtual Machine (VM) environment, or will be buring a CD/DVD.
  2. Logon to the SPC 2 appliance console. This is not the Web Interface, but the actual console of the server.
  3. Click on Install Protection Center Update
  4. Click on Browse and locate the .zip or mounted ISO file saved from Step 1. You may have to navigate to a sub-folder on your media of choice.
  5. Click on Run
  6. Click on the Use a proxy server for your LAN radio button.
  7. Click on the Address input box and enter the IP Address, or Fully Qualified Domain (FQDN) of the corporate proxy.
Note: The FQDN must be in the form of: machinename.domain.extension (.com, .local, .net, etc.)
  8. Click the Port input box and enter the appropriate port information.
  9. Optionally, click the Exceptions check box to allow the system to bypass the proxy for internal addresses and enter those addresses in the appropriate spot.
  10. Click Apply
  11. Click Close when done.

You may now monitor your system to verify internet connectivity has been achieved for those items that were causing errors previously.
