Issue

After installing the Network Device Enrollment Service on a SCEP server, and configuring the registry for UseSinglePassword, the SCEP admin URL (http://localhost/certsrv/mscep_admin/) shows a 500 error:

Error

In the Windows Event Viewer under Server Manager > Diagnostics > Event Viewer > Custom Views > Server Roles > Active Directory Certificate Services, the following error is found:

The Network Device Enrollment Service cannot be started (0x80070002). The system cannot find the file specified.

Environment

Windows Server 2008 R2 Enterprise Edition

Cause

NDES was installed using one set of credentials, but configured to use a second set of credentials.  Those credentials do not have a profile configured on the SCEP server.

Solution

Log into the server with the NDES Admin credentials and access the URL.  Doing this will allow the proper SCEP configuration to complete.
