SAN Transport mode removed from available transport modes for restores using the Agent for VMware Virtual Infrastructure (AVVI)

Issue



Symantec and VMware had identified a background problem against how SAN communication for restores was handled between Backup Exec and VMware. Symptoms of the issue would vary, but at least one result was that a restore was successful, though the virtual machine itself failed to boot/start.  This issue only affected restores, backups using the SAN transport mode were unaffected.

As Symantec did not receive a confirmed timescale for receiving updated code from Vmware to solve the condition. Due to this issue Symantec has withdrawn the support for SAN transport restores using Backup Exec 2010 R3 and Backup Exec 2012.

 


Solution



Work-around:

Select the NBD restore option even though a SAN backup was performed.

 

Note: 

VMWare has come out with a patch to address the initial issue on their end.  For more information please see the VMware document listed below.

A secondary issue affecting SAN restores was then identified when using the above update, which has resulted in  a decision to not provide the ability to perform SAN Transport restores (using Backup Exec 2010, 2012 or 2014 at this current time.)

This issue is currently under investigation by Symantec Corporation. Pending the outcome of the investigation, this issue may be resolved by way of a patch or hotfix in current or future revisions of the software.
