You want to reinstall the Symantec Endpoint Encryption Device Control Management Server and not have to reinstall the client software to all of your workstations.

Solution

You have reached a point where you need to reinstall Symantec Endpoint Encryption Device Control Server but you don't want to reinstall the software for all your client workstations.

You want to start by backing up your existing Device Control SQL Database. This process will depend on the version of Microsoft SQL Server you are running and will not be covered in this document. What will be covered is how to backup the Symantec Endpoint Encryption Device Control System-Generated Encryption Keys and Control Configuration which contains data about policies and queries.

Instructions for backing up the Device Control System-Generated Encryption Keys:

1. From the Device Control Management Console click Tools -> Administration.
2. Click on the Maintenance tab on the left side of the window.
3. Under the Key Backup section, click the "Backup Now..." button.
4. Click Browse and provide a network location to backup the file (a local path is also okay for this backup).
5. Provide a password to protect the file.
6. Click OK
7. If using a local path you will receive a warning prompt. This is fine since you are going to be restoring the file shortly.

Instructions for backing up the Device Control Configuration Files:

1. From the Device Control Management Console click Tools -> Administration.
2. Click on the Maintenance tab on the left side of the window.
3. Under Configuration Backup, click on the "Backup Now..." button.
4. Select the same location used in the previous backup process.
5. The file name will be pre-filled.
6. Click OK.
7. If using a local path you will receive a warning prompt. This is okay since you are going to be restoring the file shortly.

Now you are ready to follow the instructions for "Restoring a previous installation of the Device Control Management Server" starting on page 18 the Device Control Installation Guide. You can download the Installation Guide below:
