Issue

When trying to bulk edit resources, such as computers, upon clicking on the bulk edit window's Ok button, the error "Object reference is not set to an instance of an object" occurs. Note: Different errors may occur here instead of the object reference error.

Error

Object reference is not set to an instance of an object.

Cause

  1. A custom association is part of the resource being bulk edited.
  2. The custom association includes resources in the From Type and To Type from the same resource hierarchy, such as computer and resource.
  3. And, the custom association is enabled to use pick lists for both the From Type and To Type in the Enable Editing From.

Solution

Symantec is investigating this issue. The workaround is to uncheck to disable using the custom association's Enable Editing From pick lists and then perform the bulk edit. Afterwards, the pick lists can be re-enabled.

The attached SQL query can be ran to help determine if this issue exists. If so, the workaround is still the same by temporarily disabling Enable Editing From pick lists.
