Cancelling an active backup job causes an unexpected shutdown and next incremental backup takes longer than expected using Symantec System Recovery (SSR) 2011.

Issue



When a laptop is shutdown during an active Symantec System Recovery (SSR) backup, the operating system believes the shutdown was unexpected. This in turn causes the next incremental backup to perform a compare/reconcile which takes much longer than expected and also impacts performance of the machine.

To date, this issue has been seen when backups are managed centrally using Symantec System Recovery Management Solution (SSR-MS) 2011.

To confirm if you are seeing a similar issue, check the system event log for the following entry after shutting down the machine and cancelling the active job:

The previous system shutdown at xxx on xxx was unexpected.

Windows XP Professional x86

Windows 7 Professional x64


Solution



At the present time, there is no workaround to this issue. When the incremental backup does a compare/reconcile, you must wait for the backup to complete successfully. Once you do this, all subsequent backups should run as expected (until the next unexpected shutdown).
