Firewall Ports and Hosts required to opened in order to have "Symantec Mail Security for Microsoft Exchange" fully operational

Issue



It is necessary to know which hosts on which ports are needed to be opened up in the firewall/proxy in order for the Antivirus and Antispam definitions to be successfully downloaded.


Error



Example of errors:
"1813  The process launched by the LaunchEx command returned....."
"1819  The Proxy Server requires authentication and we are not giving it any authentication."


Environment



Symantec Mail Security for Microsoft Exchange (SMSMSE) 6.x
 


Solution



Below are the requirements

Hostname Protocol Port
liveupdate.symantec.com TCP 80
liveupdate.symantecliveupdate.com TCP 80
definitions.symantec.com TCP 80

 

 

If Premium AntiSpam will be used additionally it is needed

Hostname Protocol Port
register.brightmail.com TCP 443
aztec.brightmail.com TCP 443

 


Note:
There are workarounds offered by Symantec in order to bypass the above requirements going through a proxy. However these workarounds are only provided "as is" since they are depended on the Operating Systems System accounts capability and restrictions to download which can not be troubleshot by Symantec as it is outside the support boundaries.
