The archive bit is not reset when running OFF-HOST incremental backups. The problem is specific to multi-terabytes volumes, when backing such large volumes incremental backups would complete successfully without resetting the archive bit. A variation of this problem would sometimes see the full backup resetting the archive bit on parts of the file system rather than the entire volume.
The problem has been reported using Dell Equalogic as the OFF-HOST snapshot provider but could be encountered with other providers.
When protecting multi-terabytes volume with OFF-HOST backups, it is recommended to change the backup type from using archive bit to using the modified time.
In order to change the backup type of a job, proceed as follow:
1- In the Backup Exec console, click on Job Setup
2- Select the job or policy to modify then right click and select Properties
3- In the properties windows, under Settings select General to bring up the general properties of the job.
4- Under Backup method for files, open the pull down menu and select Using modified time for the desired job type (Full, incremental, differential).
Please be sure to refer back to this document periodically as any changes to the status of the issue will be reflected here.
