Phantom device names appear in the Central Administration Server’s Device list during a rolling upgrade.

Phantom device names appear as devices in the central administration server’s Device list during a rolling upgrade of the Backup Exec software. The phantom device names also appear on other any server that has been upgraded to the latest version of Backup Exec. This issue occurs when the Central Admin Server Option is  configured to use the legacy Shared Storage Option (SSO).

 Phantom devices names that appear include the following:

•    FIXEDDISK xxxx

•    Unconfigured disk storage xxxx

•    Unconfigured disk cartridge xxxx

•    REMOVDSK xxxx

When doing rolling upgrades of a Backup Exec Central Admin Server Option (CASO) environment that is also configured to use the legacy Shared Storage Option (SSO), the above device names may appear in the Central Administration Server's device console if Backup Exec has not been upgraded on all of the managed Backup Exec servers in a CASO environment.

Symantec defines a rolling upgrade as the process of upgrading a Central Administration Server to the latest version of Backup Exec during one time period, and then upgrading the Backup Exec software on the managed Backup Exec servers at a later time. In this scenario the version of Backup Exec on the Central Administration Server and the versions of Backup Exec on the Managed Backup Exec servers do not match.

 When viewing the storage devices on the Central Administration Server (and other upgraded managed Backup Exec servers) from managed Backup Exec servers that are running different Backup Exec versions, the above mentioned devices names appear.

 


Solution



Symantec recommends not to attempt any changes to the phantom devices. To manage storage devices in the CASO environment during a rolling upgrade of the environment, only do so at the upgraded Central Administration Server, or at the upgraded Managed Backup Exec servers themselves.

The phantom name issue will resolve itself when the rolling upgrade of the CASO environment finishes. After the CASO environment upgrade has completed, the latest version of Backup Exec should be installed on the Central Administration Server, and on all Managed Backup Exec servers.
