UPDATED April 12, 2012: The below mentioned hotfix is no longer publicly available as all fixes are included in NetBackup 7.5 Maintenance Release 1 (7.5.0.1), available at the link provided in the Related Article below.  The remainder of this TechNote remains for informational purposes, but the supported path for use of Replication Director is now to use NetBackup 7.5.0.1 or above.

--

In addition to NetBackup 7.5 software, make sure that the following hotfixes are also installed before using Replication Director:

  • NB_7.5_ET2698772_1.zip: The RD server hotfix on NetBackup master and media servers.
  • NB_7.5_ET2698773_1.zip: The RD client hotfix on NetBackup clients, master and media servers.
Note:             The RD hotfixes include the necessary catalog hotfix updates.
Do not install NB_7.5_2710406_1.zip (the separate catalog hotfix) after installing the RD hotfixes. If the catalog hotfix has already been installed, you do not need to uninstall it before installing the RD hotfixes.

Do not use Replication Director before you install the hotfixes.

Symantec NetBackup Replication Director requires the “NetApp Plug-in for Symantec NetBackup" which can be found on the NetApp site at the following link:

More information regarding Replication Director can be found in the Related Articles below.

Error

If you used Replication Director before installing 7.5.0.1 or the hotfixes, first determine whether any Replication Director-related snapshots or replicas were created:

Deactivate any backup policies that point to storage lifecycle polices that were created to use Replication Director. (Clear the Go into effect at attribute in the Policy Attributes tab.)

  • Run the following command on the master server to create a list of all Replication Director images:
    bpimmedia -L -stype Network_NTAP
    (See below for sample output.)
  • Expire all Replication Director-related snapshots and replicas from the NetBackup catalog.
    • Use the following command to expire individual images:
      bpexpdate -backupid <backupid> -d 0 -force_not_complete
      (See below for sample output.)
    • Use the following command to expire all Replication Director images:
      bpexpdate -stype Network_NTAP -force_not_complete
      (See below for sample output.)

After deleting the images, install the hotfix.

If you installed the hotfix, but then realized that Replication Director-related snapshots or replicas had been created before the hotfix was installed:

Deactivate any backup policies that point to storage lifecycle polices that were created to use Replication Director. (Clear the Go into effect at attribute in the Policy Attributes tab.)

Uninstall the hotfix.

Verify whether any Replication Director-related images were created before the hotfix was installed:

  • Run the following command on the master server to create a list of all Replication Director images:
    bpimmedia -L -stype Network_NTAP
  • Compare the backup time of the images with the hotfix installation time.
  • If any snapshots or snapshot replicas were created before the hotfix installation time, expire those snapshots and replicas from the NetBackup catalog.

Reinstall the hotfix.
