How to create a detailed installation log while installing PGP Desktop (for troubleshooting purposes)

From a command line session, use the msiexec command with this format/options:

msiexec /i [PGPinstaller.msi] /l*vx [pgplogfile.log]

Example:

msiexec /i C:\PGPDesktopWin64-10.2.0MP3HF1.msi /l*vx C:\pgp.log       
(This would run the MSI file at C:\PGPDesktopWin64-10.2.0MP3HF1.msi, and write the installation log to C:\pgp.log.)

 

Notes:

- This is a standard MSI option for the logging, and not something specific to PGP.  See http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb490936.aspx for more MSI command line switches.
- the /l*vx switches mean:  create a log (l) for all standard items (*) and add verbose info (v) and extra debug info (x)
- You still need to run the installer as a local administrator, like all PGP Desktop installations.  On Windows Vista and Window7, you should start your command line session with the "run as administrator" option.
- If you don't specifically note which directory the installation MSI file is in, it will assume it is in the current directory.  It is recommended to give the entire path to the install file (you can usually drag the file and drop it into your command line window, which will put the file+path into the window at your cursor location).  Similarly, if you don't explicitly say what directory to store the log file, it will save it in the current directory of the command line session when you run the msiexec command.
