Symantec System Recovery (SSR) 2011 does not enumerate removable USB devices for backup

Problem
SSR does not see a USB "stick" or "card" memory device (known by several terms, e.g., thumb drive, flash drive, pen drive, "stick", USB key, etc.). The same appplies to SD/XD cards of all classes and sizes.
Error
No error. Device is not enumerated by SSR, even if Windows shows the device in Disk Management.
Cause
This is by design. Because these devices do not use LBA sector addressing, SSR will not enumerate them for backup.
Solution
There is no workaround. If the data written to such a device needs to be protected, copy the data to a standard Windows disk to be included in either a disk-based backup or to use the File and Folder backup method to protect just that particular set of files.
