Cause

The exchange backup job may fail with the above mentioned error if multiple snapshot providers are installed on the exchange server.

Solution

  1. The exchange writer may be in failed state, to verify the writer status run the following command through the command prompt on the exchange server:

    vssadmin list writers

Ensure no wirters in the list show any errors. Example:

    Writer name: 'Microsoft Exchange Writer'
    State: [9] Failed

  2. To verify the snapshot providers run the following command through the command prompt on the exchange server:

    vssadmin list providers

Check the output and see how many providers are installed.

  3. In the backup job properties for Exchange select:
    • Use AOFO with Microsoft Volume Shadow Copy Service with the snap shot provider System-Use Microsoft Shadow Copy Provider to take a snapshot backup.

  4. The following article can also be used to make sure that the Microsoft Shadow Copy provider takes precedence over any other provider:
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/941956

  5. Reboot the Exchange server to make the Exchange writer stable.
