Problem

Redirected restores of VMWare guests fail with error ‘0xe000957e – Unable to create the new virtual machine’.

On the ESX server we see there is an 'invalid configuration for device 2' error during creation of the guest, which fails the restore and removes files again. Investigations have identified 'device 2' relates to the Network card configuration and occurs if a Distributed Virtual Switch has been created and used by the VM guest.

Error

‘0xe000957e – Unable to create the new virtual machine’   seen in Backup Exec restore Job Log

'invalid configuration for device 2' is seen in Task list of the target ESX server during attempted restore.

Solution

Workaround
Redirect restore the complete VM guest server, to a local disk of the Backup Exec server and use the VMware VMConvertor tool to import into the ESX server.
