zzzVirtApp000zzz error returned during a VMware Agent backup of a system containing Exchange and Active Directory

Performing an VMware Agent Backup of a Virtual Machine (VM) configured as both a Domain Controller and an Exchange 2003 server reports the error shown below and additionally the GRT restore selections for Exchange are not available. Depending on the environment (Operating System and bit level of the media server) accompanying messages and UMI codes may vary.
It should also be noted that currently all affected environments have Exchange 2003 configured with components on different volumes and the volumes in question were logical drives in extended partitions.
Error. Cannot backup directory \zzzVirtApp000zzz and its subdirectories.
This issue only occurs with early Exchange 2003 build/revision levels and has been confirmed as a problem against Exchange 2003 revision/build 6.5.6944 (other early revisions may also be affected)
Upgrade the Exchange 2003 installation to ate least SP2, which corresponds to revision/build 6.5.7638
