How to configure Symantec NetBackup (tm) to send email notification only when a job fails

Solution

The "backup_exit_notify.cmd" script in <install_dir>\NetBackup\bin\ gets backup status passed to it when a job is complete.  Below,  BLAT (available at http://www.blat.net) is used to send an email if the status code is greater than "1". The subject of the email is "CLIENTNAME:STATUSCODE".

Add this line before the ":EndMain" section

@if "%5" gtr "1" goto SendEmail

Add these lines to the end of the script (modify the -t parameter to whom the email should go, and -server to the outbound/SMTP email server):

:SendEmail
@blat %OUTF% -s %1:%5 -t emailuser@domain.com -i NetBackup -server emailserver.domain.com -q
@endlocal
