Backup job of System State or Shadow Copy Components produces the error: 0x8000ffff- Catastrophic failure.


In the Backup Exec selection list, when selecting the Shadow Copy Components an error message occurs:

An error was encountered while attempting to browse the contents of Shadow Copy Components.

A failure occurred initializing the Volume Snapshot Service.


The Volume Shadow Copy Service shows errors in the Event Viewer Logs.

Event ID: 8193
Source: VSS
Volume Shadow Copy Service error: Unexpected error calling routine CoCreateInstance.
Event ID: 34
Source: VolSnap
The shadow copies of volume <volume> were aborted because of a failure to ensure crash dump or hibernate consistency.



BEWS Version: Backup Exec 12.5 for Windows Servers rev 2213 SP4

OS Version: Server 2008 Standard v6 build 6001 SP1 32/64: 32bit



Go to Windows command prompt and run the following command:
Vssadmin List Writers
If the command fails to show any writers on the system. This indicates that there are VSS issues on the system.


Reboot the server. If this still fails to produce desired results perform the following:

  1. Use Windows Server Backup to backup the resource.
  2. Contact Microsoft Support for further assistance.
