Problem

The Replication Management Server will not start.

Error

The Storage Replicator RMS service terminated with service-specific error 8201

Solution

The Replication Management Server (RMS) service terminated with service-specific error 8201 in the Event Log. The cause: the database that holds the jobs is corrupt and will need to be recovered. If the database was backed up, recover the database. If not, the database needs to be renamed and a new one created.

Replication Exec 3.x  (see below for Storage Replicator steps)

1. From the RMS server, stop the Enterprise Network Layer and Replication Exec DBMS services
2. Browse to the database directory
<drive_letter>\Program Files\Veritas\Replication Exec\Database
3. Delete or rename the RMS.db and RMS.log files

Note: If a backup of these files was created before the error occurred, paste them now into the above folder and the VRE jobs will be recovered. If this is the case, go directly to step 10.

4. To create a new blank database, run a Repair Install:
5. Open Add/Remove Programs
6. Select Veritas Replication Exec and click Change
7. Click Next on the Welcome screen
8. Select Repair and click Next
9. Once completed, click Finish
10. Before rebooting the system, verify that the RMS.db and RMS.log files have been restored.
11. If a recovery from backup database files was performed, a reboot is not required. Simply start the Replication DBMS, Enterprise Network Layer, Replication Service Agent and Replication Management Server services (in that order)

Storage Replicator

If the Database files have been backed up after the jobs were created, the jobs can be recovered as follows:

1. From the RMS machine, stop the Replication Management Server service
2. Browse to the Databases directory
a. <drive_letter>\VSR\Databases (drive_letter will be the location where Storage Replicator is installed)
3. Rename the RXDB and RXDB.index files
4. Recover the RXDB and RXD. index files from a backup.
5. Restart the RMS service, then restart the Replication Service Agent (RSA) service
6. Open the console and the jobs will be displayed in the VSR Admin console

If the Database files were not backed up, the jobs will have to be recreated as follows:

1. From the RMS machine, stop the RMS service (if started)
2. Browse to the databases directory
a. <drive_letter>\VSR\Databases (drive_letter will be the location where Storage Replicator is installed)
3. Rename the RXDB and RXDB.index files
4. Restart the RMS service (This will create new database files.)  Then restart the RSA service.
5. Open the console and recreate the jobs.
