How to locate and remove SLF files (a.k.a. license keys or serial numbers) for Backup Exec 2012 and later versions

In some circumstances, it may be necessary to find the Symantec License File (SLF) so that it can be be copied or removed from the Backup Exec default location.


Solution



The files are located in : 

Windows Server 2008 - C:\ Program Data\Symantec Shared\Licenses and C:\Users\All Users\Symantec Shared\Licenses

Windows 2003 - C:\Program Files\Common Files\ Symantec Shared\Licenses

To remove the licensing from BE 2012 and later versions:

  • Cut and Paste the files out of the location to a new folder.
  • Stop and then restart all Backup Exec services.

Note: In older versions of Backup Exec, serial numbers or license keys were used and stored in a file called BESERNUM.XML. This file is located by default under Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Symantec\Backup Exec.
