Issue

While running the backup to Deduplication storage Backup Exec tries to load media which can be overwritten or reused from the existing reusable media. However, if the media are not recognized or has a problem, it reports an alert stating that media in slot xx is written in an unrecognized format and cannot be used.  There might also me a related entry in the Event log:

Event ID: 58059
Source: Backup Exec
Type: Information
Description: Backup Exec Alert: Media Information
(Server: "ServerName") (Job: "JobName") Media is unrecognized.

The media in drive '<Drive>' is written in an unrecognized format. Erase the media to make it usable.

Error

Backup to Deduplication folder hangs mounting media with unrecognized media. The media labeled '?' from slot '2352', read by drive 'Deduplication Storage Folder 0001:21' is written in an unrecognized format. Erase the media to make it usable.

In the SGMON it shows the following error against all the medias that are Unrecognized

Event ID: 58059
Source: Backup Exec
Type: Information
Description: Backup Exec Alert: Media Information
(Server: "ServerName") (Job: "JobName") Media is unrecognized.

The media in drive '<Drive>' is written in an unrecognized format. Erase the media to make it usable.

Cause

These are generally caused by a media that was in use during a backup, that was not able to close properly due to a problem with network communication either between the media server and the source of the backup, or the media server and the targeted location of the Deduplication folder. Often times these media would have ended up in this state, from a job that failed, due to the communication error.
