When running a Granular Recovery Technology (GRT) backup job of Sharepoint, Exchange, or Active Directory a 'Job Type' of Catalog appears and runs automatically when no catalog job has been defined or scheduled.

In Backup Exec 2012 the Updating Catalogs stage , as seen in previous version of backup exec, now runs as a separate job . The job is responsible for cataloging the GRT backup sets .

When a GRT backup runs, a new feature in Backup Exec 2012 is that the stage of the backup that showed up in Backup Exec 2010 called 'Updating Catalogs' now runs as a separate Catalog job - See Fig. 1.  In this phase of the backup, the granular items in the backup are enumerated and cataloged so they are visible for restore within Backup Exec.
